Project Background
The Burn BattleSchool contest is a series of events that showcases the best that hip-hop has to offer. The event featured some of the world’s best breakdancers, b-boys, and graffiti artists, as well as a DJ set from one of the founding fathers of hip-hop itself, Grandmaster Flash.
The interactive website employs our expanded visual and responsive design tactics that highlights the branding, yet still provides the user with an easy-to-navigate architecture.
The Battle Starts Here
The project called for a web portal that allows fans of this multi-nation event to participate in the contest. Users were treated to a dynamic media experience to help "put them at the event.” A simple sign-up process was developed to allow b-boys the opportunity to upload and share their acts in the hopes of being selected to join the tour at a location near them.
User Driven Media Content
Contestants were prompted to create an account online after which they would upload their showcase-reel, which might consist of images or video. Upon completion, their profile would be reviewed by a hand-picked team of expert judges to determine whether or not they had the talent to be invited to the tour as participants.
The promotion received thousands of entries and files totaling many gigabytes, all of which had to be reviewed by the judges to select the best of the best. We developed a unique Content Management System (CMS) to help allow admins the ability to easily manage the data so that they could focus their energy on the contestant review process.
Platform and Development Frameworks
The response to the promotion was huge and contestant entries were received from Moscow to Istanbul and many other points around the world. To handle this, we employed an IP-detection tool to help serve up the site’s content in the user’s native language. This process needed to be intuitive for users and manageable by the site’s admins.
To seamlessly accomplish these tasks, we developed a custom CMS framework. The chosen framework leveraged a wide range of platforms, including PHP, MYSQL, JavaScript and SASS. The end result was a fully custom CMS that allows global admins to create and to push content live to the interactive website that was targeted at geo-specific regions. The front-end, the CMS and the data feeds are all running on the Amazon Web Service (AWS) architecture, with deployments spread over multiple data centers for improved performance and redundancy. Content is delivered over the Akamai Content Delivery Network (CDN) so that global users can enjoy reduced latency.
Interactive Website Design
The client’s goal was to deliver an interactive website that is not only intuitive but provides brand-consistent imagery. We collaborated with the client’s team to select the visuals that would ultimately help us sculpt the site into an award-winning design.
We were further tasked with ensuring that no matter where viewers lived or on what device they were viewing, they’d be treated to a consistent brand message and supporting visuals. While this is often a challenge for other developers, it’s a discipline we’ve mastered through years of developing sites for international brands. Ultimately, the site is firing on all cylinders and has helped the event promotion exceed all KPI goals across all metrics.
Core Functionality and Features
The Burn Energy Battle School promotional interactive website provides its users with an easy and intuitive interface that allows for easy registration, upload of media content and unique news and event posts. All of the content is delivered in a rich, user interface that fully supports any language. The end result is a visually dynamic experience that keeps users engaged for hours.
Simplified User Experience
The users are quickly directed through the simple process of registering and activating their new account in two simple steps.
User Shared Media Content
Once the user's account has been activated, they are allowed to complete their bio and are prompted to upload images and video that highlights their skills.
Event Posts & Ticket Purchasing
Event coverage is generated by the admins and posted to the site using the custom CMS. Facebook event integration and ticket purchasing is available and can be added as needed at the admin’s discretion on each event post.
Project Outcome
High-profile athletes and celebrities are great at creating interest, but once the user has reached the interactive website, the interface and overall design are crucial to keeping viewers engaged. With tens of thousands of attendees, it’s clear that our careful attention to design and functionality were conducive to success.
